HB wire, short for hard bright wire, is low carbon steel wire that has been cold drawn from wire rod to a smaller diameter. The drawing makes it harder and stronger and gives it a clean, bright surface. It is used to make nails, wire mesh, fencing, and a wide range of wire products.

It is one of the most widely used steel products in India, and one of the least talked about. This guide explains how it is made, the grades and sizes you will come across, and how to order it without surprises.

How is HB wire made?

HB wire starts as hot rolled wire rod, commonly 5.5 mm in diameter. The rod is cleaned of scale, then pulled through a series of dies, each one slightly smaller than the last, until it reaches the finished diameter. It is then coiled.

Each pass through a die does two things. It reduces the diameter, and it work hardens the steel. That is where the hard in hard bright comes from: the more the wire has been drawn down, the higher its tensile strength. The bright comes from the clean, scale free surface the dies leave behind.

Which grades are used?

HB wire is usually drawn from low carbon steel. Common grades include SAE 1008, SAE 1010 and SAE 1018. Lower carbon grades draw easily and suit nails and general wire products. Slightly higher carbon grades give more strength for demanding applications.

What sizes and strengths are available?

HB wire is supplied across a range of diameters, typically from about 1.6 mm to 5 mm. Confirm SSEW range. Tensile strength depends on the grade and how much the wire has been drawn down, so it should be specified as a range on the order rather than assumed.

What is HB wire used for?

  • Nails of all kinds, from construction to furniture and packaging.

  • Welded wire mesh, chain link fencing and wire panels.

  • Wire products such as hangers, clips, hooks and handles.

  • Fasteners and other formed parts, depending on grade.

HB wire, annealed wire and GI wire: what is the difference?

Bright bars are grouped by the finishing process, because the process decides the size range, tolerance and surface you get.

HB wire has no coating, so it will rust if stored in damp conditions. Keep coils covered, off the floor and lightly oiled if they will be stored for long. It is also commonly used as the base wire for galvanising.

How to specify HB wire

A complete order states the grade, the diameter and its tolerance, the tensile strength range, the coil weight, the surface condition and whether a test certificate is needed. Our buyer's checklist covers each of these in detail.

Frequently asked questions

  • What does HB stand for in HB wire?

Hard bright. The wire is hard from cold drawing and bright from its clean surface.

  • Is HB wire the same as GI wire?

No. GI wire has a zinc coating for corrosion protection. HB wire is uncoated, though it is often used as the base wire before galvanising.

  • Does HB wire rust?

Yes, if it is left in damp conditions. Store it dry and covered.

  • Can HB wire be bent?

It can be formed, but it is stiffer than annealed wire. For tying and binding, annealed wire is the better choice.
